  • Purpose

    Mosaic 2.0 aims to stimulate the influx of the under-represented group of graduates in the Netherlands with a migration background into the academic world. Mosaic 2.0 aims to promote the further development of an inclusive work environment within Dutch universities. By facilitating creating a network, the scientific potential of researchers with a migration background is made more visible.

  • Who can apply

    Professors and associate professors submit on behalf of the candidate as main applicant the pre-proposal and the full proposal and when submitting the pre-proposal they have the right to confer doctorates. The candidate:

    • was born in one of the countries in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Central and South America or Turkey. or: at least one of the candidate's parents was born in one of these countries.
    • has Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit (type II or IV).
    • graduated and completed the entire university degree in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. or: is a final year student at a university in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and must have graduated before 8 March 2022.
  • What to apply for

    Salary costs of PhD students can be applied for. PhD candidates are appointed for 48 months at 1.0 FTE. An equivalent is also possible. In addition, a maximum of € 15,000 in material budget can be requested per FTE requested PhD position per year of appointment.

  • When to apply

    The deadline for submitting pre‐proposals is 28 September 14:00:00 CEST. The deadline for submitting full proposals is 8 March 14:00:00 CET.

  • Assessment

    Criteria

    The pre-proposal will be assessed according to the following criteria:

    • Profile of the candidate
      • Narrative CV
      • Output
      • Embedding of research
    • Research idea

    The full proposal will be assessed according to the following criteria:

    • Potential contribution to science
      • Theoretical framework
      • Scientific relevance
      • Research questions
    • Research design, research approach and methodology
      • Research design regarding to the research questions
      • Effectiveness of the research approach and methodology
      • Feasibility
    • Potential contribution to society
      • Ability to position intended research in a broader framework: the potential contribution to society.

    Procedure

    A science-wide assessment committee evaluates and prioritises the pre-proposals and full proposals according to likelihood of funding, without making use of external referees. The pre-proposals will be assessed by the assessment committee in writing. All applicants who are invited to submit a full proposal by 8 March 2022 will be invited for an interview in mid-May 2022. The assessment committee advises NWO's Executive Board that will decide on the pre-proposals and full applications in December 2021 and July 2022 respectively.

  • Write proposal

    The pre-proposal is mainly aimed at the candidate's profile. The candidate is asked in the narrative CV to describe his/her own qualities and motivation for conducting PhD research and research in particular. In addition, the candidate is asked for output, which can include both scientific and non-scientific activities that the candidate has developed. The activities should not be a simple enumeration, but are asked to outline context. The way in which the supervision takes place and the composition of the supervision team should also be described.

    The entire application focuses on the elaborated research idea. How does the proposed research potentially contribute to science and society? In addition, the most important criterion is the research design, approach and methodology. A realistic work plan should indicate step-by-step how and when the research proposal will be implemented.

  • Fill in forms

    For this call, in addition to completing the application form, we ask you to also fill in the appendix stating the candidate's country of birth and the country of birth of the candidate's parents. If the candidate has not yet graduated when submitting the pre-proposal, we also ask you to enclose a signed statement from the thesis supervisors stating the graduation date. The graduation date must be before March 8, 2022.
